Sanctuary Advisory Council Membership Recruitment

Individuals appointed to the 12 public seats on the Sanctuary Advisory Council serve voluntary terms of two to three years. A few times each year, with the approach of end-of-term dates for various seats, a recruitment period is opened to provide a public opportunity for interested persons to apply for membership for open positions on the council. Currently serving advisory council members may also seek to be reappointed, subject to term limit provisions described within the council's charter.

Applications are currently being sought for 4 advisory council seats: Tourism member and alternate seats, Recreational Fishing member and alternate seats, Research member and alternate seats, and Non-Consumptive Recreation member and alternate seats.

Candidates will be selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat, community and professional affiliations, and views regarding the protection and management of sanctuary resources. Selected applicants should expect to serve as a volunteer for a two to three year term.

Tourism Seat (member and alternate positions):

  • Familiarity and affiliation with the coastal and marine tourism industry in communities near the Sanctuary
  • Understanding of the links between tourism, Sanctuary resources and human activities
  • Ability and willingness to communicate with key representatives from the coastal and marine tourism industry.

Recreational Fishing Seat (member and alternate positions):

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with recreational and sport fishing within the Sanctuary region;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with various recreational and sport fishing activities, organizations and businesses in the Sanctuary region;
  • Knowledge of laws, policies and practices affecting recreational and sport fishing within the Sanctuary
  • Ability and willingness to communicate effectively and build agreements with key representatives from recreational and sport fishing communities.

Research Seat (member and alternate positions):

  • Affiliation with scientific research institutions or organizations active in the sanctuary region;
  • Ability and willingness to effectively communicate with multiple institutions and scientists;
  • Direct experience with marine research programs;
  • Experience, ability and availability to conduct outreach within the research community consistent with the research goals of the sanctuary and the mission of the SAC;
  • Commitment and availability of time to assist with development and operation of a Research Working Group.

Non-Consumptive Recreation Seat (member and alternate positions):

  • Familiarity and affiliation with the non-consumptive marine recreation industry, groups, and activities in communities near the sanctuary;
  • Understanding of the links between non-consumptive marine recreation, sanctuary resources, and human activities;
  • Ability and willingness to communicate effectively with key representatives from the non-consumptive marine recreation community in the sanctuary region.
