National marine sanctuary offices and visitor centers closed to the public; waters remain open

NOAA's national marine sanctuary offices and visitor centers are currently closed to the public, and in accordance with Executive Order 13991 - Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask Wearing, all individuals in NOAA-managed areas are required to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on mask-wearing and maintaining social distances. Sanctuary waters remain open for responsible use in accordance with CDC guidance, U.S. Coast Guard requirements, and local regulations. RV Shearwater Captain

Terrence Shinn joined the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary in August of 2003 to serve as Captain of the newly finished research boat the Shearwater. He has been a USCG licensed captain for 21 years and has been working on research boats in and around the Channel Islands for the majority of those years. He has worked on a wide variety of vessels including tugboats, container ships, banana boats, tanker ships, and many different research boats. In addition to working as a captain, he has extensive experience working as a Marine Engineer, a Marine Surveyor, and a Commercial diver. Terrence holds a Bachelor’s degree from the California Maritime Academy in Nautical Industrial Technology. In his spare time he owns a personal boat and has enjoyed cruising the Pacific Northwest all the way up to Alaska where he recently spent 5 months. Born and raised in the Ventura area he has always enjoyed accessing the backcountry via motorcycle around the Ventura and Santa Barbara area.
