Vessel Operations Coordinator / NOAA Corps Officer

LTJG Kristin Raja reported to Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary for her assignment as Vessel Operations Coordinator in July 2017. Previously, LTJG Raja served as the Inouye Regional Center Dive Center Coordinator and as a Researcher at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu. She helped design a custom fill station and organize setup of the dive center while supporting approximately 60 active NOAA divers. She also worked with the Coral Reef Ecosystem Program on the Eco-Spatial Information Team, and contributed to the Center’s Fish and Ocean & Climate Change teams in the field. Prior to working for PIFSC, LTJG Raja served as a Junior Officer aboard NOAA Ship Fairweather for two years. During this time she qualified as Officer of the Deck, Hydrographer-in-charge, and Hydrography launch coxswain. She also managed several hydrographic survey sheets and served as lead diver for the ship.

LTJG Raja joined the NOAA Corps in February of 2012 after working as a Dive Instructor in Hawaii. She has also worked as a software consultant in Houston, and interned at NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia modeling carbon uptake in the ocean. Her first professional internship involved studying the effect of epiphytes on the acoustic properties of seagrasses at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute. LTJG Raja earned a BS in Engineering Science with minors in Math and Environmental Studies from Trinity University. She is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, DAN Instructor, NOAA Rescue Swimmer, and NOAA Divemaster. A former competitive swimmer and water polo player, she loves to be in or on the water as much as possible.
