Jackie Buhl joined the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary as Research Specialist in 2004 where she assisted with research operations including permitting, reports, and scientific data collection on the R/V Shearwater. In 2005, Jackie left the sanctuary to travel, work, volunteer and study her way around the world for nearly 10 years. This included working on a variety of projects studying various species of primates in Nigeria, Kenya, and Puerto Rico; teaching marine biology, scuba diving, and sailing to high school and college students in the Caribbean; designing a summer marine conservation program in coastal Kenya; teaching English in the Peruvian jungle; and teaching scuba diving in Puerto Rico.

Jackie rejoined the CINMS team in 2014 as a Technical Science Writer & Researcher and is currently working on the next Condition Report which establishes the status and trends of resources in the sanctuary. In addition she is working on getting the Channel Islands active on the Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network. Jackie graduated with Bachelor of Science in Zoology from UC Santa Barbara and a Master of Science in Primate Behavior from Roehampton University in the UK. Jackie is a certified EMT, PADI scuba instructor, and has her USCG 100 ton captain's license.
