NATURE OF CASUALTY

Rammed by tanker S. C. T. Dodd, as the Dodd pulled from the San Juan, water rushed in, causing her to founder.

Slight ground swell, breeze gentle with starlight. Our ship made every possible effort to avoid collision by changing course to starboard. Assistance was rendered by tanker Dodd and S.S. Munani, Wreck Report San Juan

Light breeze, intermittent light fog, small sea and gentle Northwesterly swell. Proper helm and engine maneuvers and proper signals made by S. C. T. Dodd.Collision with San Juan of San Francisco, California. S.S. San Juan changed course and crossed bow of S.C.T. Dodd. Wreck Report S.C T. Dodd

Since reporting to you that 71 lives were lost on the San Juan, we have heard from relatives reporting 2 others, and we now find that there were 73 lives lost on the San Juan. This is made up of 20 members of the crew and 53 passengers. We might explain that it has been the custom on our ship that any passengers arriving on our dock at sailing hour, that we permit them to board the ship and purchase their tickets from the purser. As there were several who did this it has added to our difficulties in getting the correct list at the beginning of our investigation. We believe, however, that we completely checked our passengers and crew and that the number of deaths through this disaster, which we believe to number 73, will not be changed. Our records indicate that 3 women were saved and 2 women's bodies recovered by the Coast Guard Cutter Thane making the number of women brought ashore 5 of who only 3 were alive.
