On September
3, the Drumburton left San Francisco in ballast bound for
Puget Sound to load cargo for Valparaiso. When she had passed
out of the Golden Gate the fog closed in and a treacherous sea
carried the ship on the sharp rocks of Point San Pedro, 10 miles
south. The bottom was punctured in several places and the ship
settled quickly into a saddle of rocks from which nothing but
the storms of winter will ever dislodge her. All that may be saved
are the sails, rigging, and other probable equipment. Marine
