Through Research, Education and Conservation PIER strives to assure healthy, sustainable oceans for our future. We do all this to develop the public's understanding and appreciation for the ocean and its life, and to urge our audience and supporters to act as stewards of the marine environment. Scientists at PIER are conducting research on the movement of Giant Seabass in the CINMS. Check out their website to learn more about this work.

Learn about current research on marine mammal strandings throughout southern California. Check out the SBMNH's research programs, which include extensive work on the invertebrates of the Santa Barbara Channel.

  • Institute for Computational Earth System Science, University of California, Santa Barbara: http://www.icess.ucsb.edu/
The Institute for Computational Earth System Science(ICESS), located on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, provides an environment in which Earth and computer science are strongly coupled. Our focus is on research and graduate education in Earth sciences, with emphasis on processes governing the environmental optics of the Earth. CINMS works with ICESS scientists on a project called "Plumes and Blooms: Studying the Color of the Santa Barbara Channel". Check out:

  • The Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (HABHRCA) was signed into law on November 13th, 1998, becoming P.L. 105-383. The Act recognized that many of our nation's coastal areas suffer from harmful algal blooms (HAB) and hypoxia each year, threatening coastal ecosystems and endangering human health.http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/redtide/pdfs/habhrca_fact_sheet.pdf
