BLACK OYSTERCATCHER:
A strictly
coastal bird of essentially rocky habitats, sometimes seen on adjacent
sandy beaches. These chunky shorebirds have laterally flattened,
heavy bills that can reach into mollusks and pry the shells open;
they also probe sand for worms and crabs.
RANGE: Resident on rocky shores and islands along the Pacific
coast from the Aleutians to Baja California.
