Internship Program

Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary interns gain experience working directly with Sanctuary staff to manage the marine resources found within CINMS through education, outreach, research and resource protection programs. Internship Descriptions.
   Internship opportunities are available to undergraduate or graduate college
Students. All internship positions are volunteer without compensation and are selected on a competitive basis. Applicants are responsible for paying individual expenses
associated with relocation, travel, and room and board. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary does not provide assistance with housing or transportation.
   Applicants should possess an interest in marine resource management and public education. Independent, reliable, committed, and outgoing individuals are encouraged to apply. CINMS accepts applications for internships in the winter, spring, summer, and fall. A minimum commitment of 3 months is required, 10 –20 hours per week, with an opportunity for internship credit.

Internship Position Descriptions

Education & Outreach Intern:

- Assist staff at public outreach events such as Whale Festival, Earth Day, Harbor Festival, etc.
- Assist with the production and distribution of educational publications, brochures, flyers, videos, and   other products
- Respond to public inquires about the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary
- Assist with promotion of Sanctuary sponsored events
- Perform Sanctuary outreach talks and slide presentations for local schools and groups
- Assist with organization and administration of Sanctuary educational events such as the Great   American Fish Count, Sanctuary Educational Boat Trips, Symposiums, Teacher Workshops, and Marine   Educators Regionalevents


Media/ Communication Intern:

- Catalog, scan, and track images for the CINMS slide library
- Catalog, label, and organize the CINMS video library
- Maintenance and inventory of still and video camera equipment
- Assist Web developer with CINMS Web maintenance and content production
- Assist with photographic and video documentation of sanctuary events
- Assist with CINMS database entries and updates for local, state, and federal agencies, organizations,   and media

Research Intern:

- Reviews research and policy related publications/ documents for the CINMS Resource library database
- Work with research staff to track researchers in the sanctuary using the SPITS marine permitting   database
- Assist with preparation for the Sanctuary Quest Research Expeditions
- Assist with research cruises in CINMS waters and research vessels
- Assist with research section of the CINMS web page
- Obtain resource journals for research staff from UCSB or other libraries
- Assist with planning for Research Advisory Panel and other collaborative research programs

Resource Protection Intern:

- Assist Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) and staff with the coordination of meeting logistics, mailings,   contacts, databases, and reference materials.
- Assist marine policy staff with research and meeting preparation related to the marine reserves   process and other policy issues
- Assist with documentation and research for the sanctuary’s management plan

GIS Intern:

- Assist with CINMS SAMSAP aerial monitoring program
- Assist with GIS database used to monitor Sanctuary resources
- Assist with production of CINMS charts and visuals using ArcView GIS
