Explore our new marine life field guide loaded with hundreds of photos and videos covering critters from the vampire squid to the gigantic blue whale! In this online guide, you will find photos, streaming video and important biological information for over 100 marine species from each of the Marine Sanctuaries in the United States.

Kelp forest rock-bottom and shallow sand-bottom communities make up the predominant nearshore habitats. A few of the species you will see are the sea sponge, kelp crab, spiny lobster, octopus and squid, sea stars and sea urchins. Common fish of the kelp forest include garibaldi, opal eye, kelp bass, California sheepshead, sea perch and rockfish. Common animal species in sand habitat include sea pansies, polychaetes, sand dollars, several species of rays, sand dabs and turbot.
