Wreck Report

Lake Gebhart was purchased by Alaska Steamship Co. 1923. McDonald

Photograph Caption: Wrong port. The SS Lake Gebhart ran aground in the fog at Toleak Point, south of Hoh Head, May 9, 1923 while carrying cargo of salt. She slipped from the reef four days later and went to her grave in the Giants Graveyard, six miles south of the Quillayute River. The crew of the vessel had earlier abandoned without incident. The 2,810 ton vessel, owned by the U.S. Shipping Board, had just a short while earlier been purchased by the Alaska Steamship Company. Part of her cargo was removed before she sank; only the tip of her mast broke the surface. Gibbs [2]
