NATURE OF CASUALTY

Heavy gale encountered 150 miles out of Seattle. All through the night the ship was on beam ends. In an effort to right her the mizzenmast was cut away but in falling it also took over the mainmast. Within half an hour the ship went down stern first with Capt. Crawford and eleven of the crew. In attempting to launch a boat it capsized and rolled over over later being seen, bottom up, with three men hanging on trying to right it. Matthews
