| NATURE
OF CASUALTY |
Captain Dougal
was in command of the Bremen when she approached San Francisco
in heavy fog, 118 days out from Liverpool. At 1:00 a.m. on October
16, 1882, the captain was about to give the order to heave to
and wait for better visibility, when the cry of "breakers" and
"land" was heard. The ship went head-on to the northwest side
of South Farallon Island, the after part going underwater and
the vessel "striking heavily" in a severe swell. All hands were
saved. Delgado & Haller
