Vessel struck
rocks ripping out stainless steel keel. The first inflatable life
raft was launched, but was punctured. The second life raft was
successfully launched.
This vessel
raced rather successfully for several years, doing particularly
well in the TransPac, from the West Coast to Hawaii. Legend
was the overall and class winner in 1957, and won its class in
1959. While returning to the mainland under a charter crew after
the 1967 race, the vessel stranded on San Miguel Island after
running for several days without being able to secure a good position
due to persistent fog.
The vessel
carried a six cylinder Chris-Craft engine, with a bore of 3 7/16
inches. The vessel's hollow stainless steel keel carried water
ballast which was the source of the crew's drinking water. No
organized salvage occurred (Phil Campbell, former owner, personal
communication). Morris & Lima
